Accomplishments

County government is big and the services it provides are expensive.  I've made it my duty to to understand it and make it more accessible to you.  Here are a few of my accomplishments:

2017 Accomplishments

Demolition in Endwell

I'm currently leading a coalition of town, county, and state partners to demolition two flood-ravaged, abandoned, buildings that the county [unfortunately] owns through foreclosure.  They're located at 1605 Davis Ave, just south of Burger King on Main St.  These buildings are a dangerous mess that must go.  DEMOLITION IS IMMINENT!  Read more...

Modernizing Personnel Department

Broome County is the only local government that can foreclose on a property for unpaid taxes.  This makes it a key partner to the Towns & Villages that want to demolish or rehab blighted properties.  I'm happy to announce that we've passed measures to make it cheaper and easier for the Town & Villages to get 'er done.  Read more...

Green Buildings, Green Jobs

Broome County has way too many, old, run-down buildings.  Encouraging owners to upgrade is important.  That's why I championed the local adoption of a federal program called PACE, which makes it easier for commercial building owners to hire local contractors to make energy upgrades.  Read more...

2016 Accomplishments

Year-Round Farmer's Market

Most people don't realize that agriculture is one of Broome County's largest industries.  Every year, hundreds of farms produce millions of pounds of food and ship it around the world.  Meanwhile, local people find it difficult to purchase that local food.  No longer!  Broome County has partnered with Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) to open the first year-round regional farmers market in our community.  Read more...

School Resource Officers

Schools are dealing with addictive drugs and other dangerous issues on a regular basis.  Teachers and principles don't have the time or training to handle the worst of these.  They need help.  That's why I'm proud to announce that Broome County has developed a plan to help bring School Resource Officers to more school districts.  Read more...

Fighting Blight throughout Broome County

Broome County is the only local government that can foreclose on a property for unpaid taxes.  This makes it a key partner to the Towns & Villages that want to demolish or rehab blighted properties.  I'm happy to announce that we've passed measures to make it cheaper and easier for the Town & Villages to get 'er done.  Read more...

Realigning Bus Routes with Passengers

When I came into office, Broome County had not done a major overhaul of its transit system in nearly 20 years!  During that time we've seen major changes in employment, education, and retail.  Bus routes were terribly inefficient and needed a serious reset.  Read about the actions we've taken to realign bus routes with passengers and save a lot money.  Read more...

2015 Accomplishments

Solar Farm

Solar has matured.  It reduces costs and keeps the environment clean.  I'm proud to announce that Broome County has signed an agreement to build a 4 megawatt solar farm to offset energy usage and reduce county expenses.  Read more...

Digital Purchasing

We've modernized our purchasing system.  The procurement department has eliminated nearly all paper mailings, saving thousands of dollars and opening the bidding process up to hundreds of local vendors in a cost-free way that we've never been able to do before.  Read more...

Public Hearings after 5:00pm

We've made it easier to attend public hearings by mandating that they're never before 5:00pm.  It's hard to believe, but many important meetings were being held in the middle of the day.  Read more...

2014 Accomplishments

Modernizing the Broome County Website

We're working on creating a new Broome County website.  The current website has decent content, but it's built on 10 year-old technology and doesn't work well with mobile phones & tablets.  The new version will expand the content, make it more user-focused, and bring mobile technology.  Read more...

Chairman of the Personnel Committee

Broome County employs over 1,800 people in dozens of departments.  I'm honored to be have been selected to chair the legislative committee that oversees their issues.  Read more...
