Environmental Initiatives

Building a strong, sustainable community is very important to me.  I believe this starts with reducing our dependence on corporate-scale utilities and preserving our area's natural beauty.  Therefore, I'm deeply involved in a range of environmental initiatives.

IBM Glen Trail Repairs

The IBM Glen is a gem of local nature!  It's full of biological diversity, great trails and many natural wonders.  So, when Waterman Conservation approached the County for help with several flood-ravaged trails, I worked hard to obtain a Small Community Grant to help them repair the trails.  The project restored several weather-ravaged trails, installed new culverts, and repaired emergency-vehicle routes.

BAE Solar Initiative

BAE Solar Initiative

With the former BAE site in Westover now ready for development, I'm pushing hard to incorporate solar into the plans.  Calculations suggest that if we can steer the development in the right direction, then such a project could supply nearly 50% of Binghamton University's total electricity needs.

CPACE

We have way too many old, run-down buildings in this town.  Encouraging building-owners to improve their properties is one of my key initiatives.  That's why I've championed CPACE, which provides cost-effective, private financing to do just that.

Broome County Solar Farm

Broome County Solar Farm

Broome County has partnered with SolarCity to build a 4 megawatt solar farm in Conklin.  Not only will this reduce the County's monthly electricity bill, it'll also put a serious dent in the County's fossil fuel burn.
